I’m at a loss to explain our fascination with Typewriters. Perhaps it’s the romantic images they evoke of Jack Kerouac (or any other struggling writer) clacking away late in the night on his Underwood portable typewriter from the 1930’s. Or the smooth curves of a Mad Men era Royal Safari Typewriter or the Olivetti Valentine. Or the variety and Steampunk appeal of early typewriters like the Lambert No. 1, or the Oliver or a Hammond or Blickensderfer.
Either way, the eloquent importance of this machine from the late nineteenth through the twentieth century cannot be overlooked. Plus it’s just fun to see words appear on paper through the physicality of hitting keys and striking paper with a satisfying “thwack.”
“There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” ~ Ernest Hemingway
This is why we at Arcane Objects buy, fix-up and then sell so many vintage typewriters. It’s how we started this antiques business. Since we are both writers, we only sell working typewriters. We hope you'll peck out the next "Great American Novel" on an antique typewriter you purchased from us.
If you should be looking for a specific typewriter to purchase, or you have one to sell, please feel free to fill out our contact form. Or reach out to us via our social media outlets. We’re happy to answer any questions about your own typewriter as well. There are many other folks who have more expert-level typewriter knowledge than us, but we do know a bit about them. And we certainly *LOVE* and adore them.
